How to Make Flowers Last Longer
Flowers are a great way of adding a pop of colour to any space. No matter your décor or style preferences, there is sure to be a flower that will match it perfectly. Unfortunately, flowers don’t last forever. That’s why we’ve put together a guide on how to make flowers last longer.
How to Make Your Flowers Last?
Just because your flowers are cut, it doesn’t mean you can’t still boost their longevity.
Condition The Cut Stems
Conditioning your stems can go a long way. First, you’ll want to strip all the leaves from the bottom half of each stem. This will stop any foliage from rotting in the water. Additionally, re-cut all stems, preferably with a clean angled cut, leaving no jagged edges.
It may also be a good idea to put the stems in water for two to three hours before placing them in a vase. This allows them to drink before being put on display, helping them last longer.
Homemade Plant Food
Another option is to create your own homemade plant food. Whilst they may not be as effective as a pre-made one, it is still cost-effective and simple to make.
You’ll need:
One litre of water
One tablespoon of vinegar
One teaspoon of sugar.
Stir and mix the ingredients before adding it to the flowers. This should help revive your flowers if they look like they’re dropping, giving them the extra nutrients needed to keep them looking fresh.
Water Treatments
This sound may be obvious, but always ensure your vases are clean. This will help the water to stay clean for longer. When putting your flowers in, dissolve some cut-flower food in the water before putting your blooms in. This again, will keep your water fresh, as the food is usually anti-bacterial.
Your water level should also be checked every few days and topped up when necessary.
Placement
Place your vase away from heat sources, such as radiators and fireplaces. This will help avoid wilting and ensure the water is also cool enough and doesn’t heat within the vase.
