How to Make Your Flowers Last Longer
Whenever you buy flowers, you just want them to last forever! Being so beautiful and brightening up any home, it’s sad that fresh flowers only last a week or so. However, there are some general tips to help your bouquets last for longer.
Tips to Keep Cut Flowers Fresh for Longer
Keep on Top of Water
One of the main tips to help your flowers to last longer is to regularly change the water in the vase. Remember to always fill your vase with room temperature water, rather than hot or cold, and change the water every 2 days or so. When replenishing the water, rinse the vase before adding the new fresh, clean water.
Always Use Flower Food
Make sure to always use the flower food that is attached to your fresh flowers, it will keep the water free of bacteria and keep your blooms nourished. When you change your water, as mentioned above, it’s a good idea to carry on adding flower food with every replacement. You can make a big batch of this by mixing two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and two tablespoons of sugar into one litre of water.
Prep Your Stems
The general rule of thumb for every flower is to cut at least 2cm off the end of each stem at a 45-degree angle before displaying, and retrim them every few days. Use sharp scissors and remove any leaves that will be underwater. All of this preparation will encourage water intake, keep the bacteria at bay, and maximise your bouquets surface area.
Choose the Right Display
Finally, vase choice and display position also play an important role in helping your flowers last longer. Ensure that the vessel you choose isn’t too narrow, so your arrangement isn’t too cramped. At the same time, don’t choose a vase that is too big otherwise your arrangement won’t have any form or shape.
When it comes to choosing the perfect display space for your flowers, make sure you don’t place it near a fruit bowl as the ethylene given off from ripening fruit will shorten their lifespan. Also, keep it out of direct sunlight, away from any other heat sources, and avoid anywhere with cold draughts nearby; this will dehydrate your blooms.
